James Prestley "Buster" Waits (born December 1904 in Birmingham; died 1980 in Birmingham) was one of 10 children of Grasselli Chemical Company manager Major Waits. As a boy, he served as a mascot or bat boy for Grasselli's Industrial League baseball team. After 1920 his father was assigned to the Dothan and Gadsden offices of the company.
Waits, who worked as a bookkeeper in wholesale drug store in Birmingham in 1930, enlisted in the U. S. Army at Fort McClellan on October 23, 1942. He returned to Birmingham after the war.
