Deborah Thomas is a corrections officer employed at the Birmingham City Jail. She was sworn in in 1996.

On December 7, 2005 she found a prisoner hanging in his cell from an improvised rope. She called for help and held the man up until he could be rescued.

For this action, Thomas was named "Officer of the Month" in February 2006 and "Officer of the Year" on July 27, 2006 by the Exchange Club of Birmingham.
