Edgar Valentine Smith was a writer and playwright. He graduated from the Marion Military Institute and worked for the Birmingham News.

Smith was part of The Loafers, a literary group led by Octavus Roy Cohen. His short story, "Prelude" won the O. Henry Prize in 1923. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Farrior.
