As a district agent for Curtis Publishing, Fred S. Fletcher handled wholesale and retail sales of newspapes and magazines throughout the Birmingham district during the 1920s. He opened one of the first modern newstands in the city, setting up shop at the corner of Second Avenue North and 20th Street, alongside W. G. Patterson Cigar Company Stand No. 1.
