George T. French Jr (born in Louisville, Kentucky) was president of Miles College from 2006 to 2019.
French earned his bachelor of arts in political science at the University of Louisville and attended law school at the University of Richmond before he was recruited by Miles president Albert Sloan to serve as director of development. He finished law school at Miles and also earned a Ph.D in educational leadership at Jackson State University.
French was named acting president after Sloan's retirement in 2005, and was named as his permanent successor in March 2006. During his tenure, French led several capital campaigns that solidified the college's financial footing, and also took charge of expanding the operational budget and the physical campus.
French has also served on the board of the Birmingham Education Initiative, as vice president for workforce development for the Birmingham Business Alliance's executive committee, and as board treasurer for the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. He was appointed to the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI) to advise the U.S. Department of Education.
French donated the Golden Bear statue dedicated outside Sloan-Alumni Stadium in 2011. French resigned from Miles to accept the presidency of Clark Atlanta University in August 2019.
