Jim Atkinson (born August 10, 1939 in Birmingham) is a former police officer and Mayor of Homewood and one of three candidates to qualify in the 2010 Republican primary to fill the Jefferson County Commission District 5 seat left open when Jim Carns decided not to run for re-election.

Atkinson served in the Homewood Police Department from 1967 to 1992, when he ran successfully for Mayor of Homewood. He served one term and lost his re-election bid to Barry McCulley in 1996. He spent three years with the U. S. Marshal Service and seven with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office as Chief Deputy.

Atkinson and his wife, Gale, live in Leeds and have three children and six grandchildren.
