In 1972, he served as President of the [[Alabama Optometric Association]] and earned the President's Award in 1979. For his service to the profession, he was recognized as ''Optometrist of the Year'' in 1992.  He retired in 1998 after practicing for 48 years.

James Houston Day Sr (born June 25, 1928 in Griffin, Georgia; died April 6, 2019), was an optometrist at Day Optometry Clinic in Gardendale.

Day was the son of optometrist Francis Jasper "F. J." Day. The family moved to Birmingham during his childhood, and he attended Edgewood Elementary School and Phillips High School.
