Constructed in 1968, the stadium serves primarily as a football stadium for the Birmingham Public School System in the fall. The stadium also served as the home field for the now-defunct Birmingham Steel Magnolias of the Women's Football Association in 2002-2003 and as the practice field for the defunct Birmingham Steeldogs.

Lawson Field's playing surface is covered with Astroturf which was removed from Legion Field prior to the 1996 Olympics to accommodate olympic soccer. Therefore, the hash marks at Lawson are to NCAA specifications, rather than to AHSAA standards.
