This is a List of homicides in 1889, including all cases investigated in the Birmingham District.

April 4: John Manning, an officer of the Bessemer Police Department, was shot to death while attempting to serve an arrest warrant at a home. The shooter, Sandy Jones, fled the scene and was reported seen as far away as Mexico. He was captured in Mobile in September and returned to Birmingham to stand trial. He was convicted and sentenced to hang. His execution took place on May 9, 1890 at the Jefferson County Courthouse.

George W. Blakely was killed when he was struck with a brick. Aaron M. Hayes was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. (report)
