The Magic City Guards were an African-American unit of the Alabama State Militia formed in Birmingham in 1883 by James Scott, who served as its commander. Scott was dropped from the state's roster for absenteeism and the unit was formally disbanded on August 6, 1887 due to inefficiency.
Scott attempted to raise his company to preserve order following the lynching of Lewis Houston at Capitol Park on November 24, 1883. His efforts were perceived as a form of protest by city authorities, who called upon the Birmingham Rifles to keep the streets clear.
