Magic City Harvest is a non-profit organization which supplies food to dozens of programs that feed the needy in the Jefferson, Shelby and Talladega Counties. The organization was founded in 1994 and is headed by Paulette Van Matre. It operates from 3735 Messer Airport Highway.
Magic City Harvest uses refrigerated trucks to pick up donations of food from schools, restaurants, catered events, bakeries, churches, farms and gardens, including the Bruno Vegetable Garden at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Rather than being warehoused, the food is delivered, usually the same day, to shelters and community kitchens.
Magic City Harvest is an outgrowth of Greater Birmingham Ministries, which studied similar programs in other cities. It is supported by grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control, as well as by individual donors and food suppliers. It is one of the founding organizers of the Greater Birmingham Community Food Partners and a coalition member of the Health Action Partnership.
