Michael Harriot (born October 7, 1972 in Hartsville, South Carolina) is a senior writer for The Root, a novelist, poet, spoken word artist, and a popular cultural critic on Twitter.

Harriot grew up in Hartsville, South Carolina. He was home-schooled in early grades and graduated from Hartsville High School. He completed a bachelor's degree in mass communications and media studies at Auburn University in 1995 and a master's in international business administration from Florida State University.

Harriot covered the build-up to the 2008 Olympics for The Washington Post. In 2012 he covered the presidential campaign of Illinois Senator Barack Obama and moved to Birmingham as a base of operations. Since then, Harriot launched the podcast, "The Black One" in 2013 and founded an online community called "NegusWhoRead" in 2016.
