Pelham High School is a public high school in Pelham. It was founded in 1974 as part of the Shelby County Schools system, but was taken over by the newly-created Pelham Board of Education in 2014.
Since opening, the school has been expanded several times, peaking at over 1,200 students in 2012-2013. Enrollment dropped when the school was separated from the county system and former students from Helena began attending the newly-built Helena High School.
The campus was damaged during the 1994 Palm Sunday tornado outbreak.
Pelham's band program includes the "Tower of Power" marching band, a wind ensemble, a symphonic band, and a jazz band. Band directors have included Jim Duren, Jeff Burnside and Justin Ward.
Athletics
Pelham High School's athletic teams are known as the "Panthers", and their sideline mascot is named "Paws".
The school's football team first took the field at Ned Bearden Stadium on August 28, 1976 under head coach David Bailey. Steve Rivers, the father of NFL quarterback Philip Rivers, took over the program for one season in 1980. He was succeeded a year later by Billy Tohill, who put together the Panther's first winning season in 1986. Rick Rhoades built on that success with a 41-19 record over five seasons. Brett Burnett took over the team in 2004.
Pelham's baseball team won AHSAA state championships in 2004 and 2013.
