Pell City High School is the sole public high school in the Pell City School District, which split from St Clair County Schools in the 1980s. As Pell City has grown, its student enrollment has surpassed its capacity of 900 students. The recent construction of a multi-purpose building with a new gymnasium has only partially eased the overcrowding.
Pell City's athletic teams compete in the Division 6A, Region 7 of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. The marching band is known as the "Band of Gold". The mascot is nicknamed "Emmett".
In 1997 a number of students protested an October 29 ruling by District Court Judge Ira DeMent describing precedents for constitutional limits to prayer in schools. They left class unexcused and were suspended for three days.
