Robert E. Tidwell, was born in 1884 and died in 1977 at the age of 93. He was the dean of the extension division at the University of Alabama. In 1956, Tidwell Hall was named in his honor, but his name did not appear on the outside of the building until the 1960s. He became dean in 1930 and retired in 1954 after helping to establish the first organized network of extension centers that eventually became UAB, UAH and the University of South Alabama.
