Sloss Iron & Steel Company is a descendant of the Sloss Furnace Company which was founded by Colonel James Withers Sloss. The name was changed to Sloss Iron & Steel Company in 1885 when Colonel Sloss retired and sold the company to a group of Alabama and Virginia investors represented by Hugh Morrow. The company was reorganized again in 1902 as Sloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Company when the company acquired the blast furnace plants and coal and iron ore reserves of the Sheffield Iron Company.
