It was established in 1999 by combining the former McCaw Elementary School and Scott Elementary School. In recognition of the contributions of those schools' namesakes, the gymnasium at South Hampton is named in honor of George Scott and the library for Effie McCaw.

The current principal is Johnnie Finkley.

Under the guidelines of the Alabama Accountability Act of 2015 South Hampton K-8 School was designated as a "failing" school by the Alabama Department of Education in 2016 and 2017.
