St John Cassian Orthodox Chapel is a congregation of the Eastern American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia located at 1731 13th Street North in Bessemer. The community purchased this building in October 2020. It was erected in 1959 as a Church of God. After extensive renovations, the first services were held in the new church on February 6, 2022. From December 2015, the congregation met in a chapel at the home of one of its members in Shelby County. Prior to that it met in rented space.
St John Cassian is a chapel of Glorious Ascension Monestary in Resaca, Georgia. It is served by its chaplain, the Rev. Justinian Burnett. He was ordained to the diaconate in 2019 and to the priesthood in New York City on March 7. 2021.
