Steinbauer Grocery c. 1940s

The J. C. Steinbauer Grocery was a small grocery store located at 400 50th Street South, on a small lot between 3rd and 5th Avenue South in Woodlawn.

It was founded in 1910 by John Steinbauer with $500 he borrowed on his home nearby. The store operated as a member of the Associated Grocers of the South. It was remodeled in 1935 with help from his son, Leonard.

Competition from Hills Food Stores forced Steinbauer to close the store around 1958. S & A Foods operated there in 1964.
