The Stevens Electric Light Company operated in Birmingham in the late 1880s. As of 1889 the company had the capacity to power 3,500 incandescent lights of 16 candle-power, which placed them behind the Edison Electric Illuminating Company and Merchant's Electric Light Company in generating capacity, but well ahead of the Birmingham Gas & Electric Light Company.
