Fictionalized elements

I accompanied the youth group of my family's church to a screening on opening weekend. Afterward, a member of the real Woodlawn class of 1974 (the first of the two school years covered in the film) spoke. He pointed out some historical inaccuracies over the course of his talk, although he said not to get hung up on them.

  1. The actual Woodlawn principal was much different in character.
  2. The student population was closer to 1,500 rather than the 3,000 mentioned in the film.
  3. None of the Birmingham high schools had their own stadiums. They all played at Legion Field, Lawson Field (I think he said), or Fair Park. So there was nothing unusual about the 1974 Woodlawn-Banks game taking place there, although it did have a record-setting crowd.
  4. The 1973 Woodlawn-Banks game was actually in the middle of the season, not the end.
  5. The Banks team colors were different than shown in the movie.
  6. He believed there was no actual player replaced by Nathan as potrayed in the film, so the antagonism from that player's father was completely fictional.
