WAFM-FM was Birmingham's first FM station, debuting on January 1, 1947 at FM 93.3 with a five-hour classical music format. The first voice heard over the new station was that of opera star "Gigli". The station was owned by Advance Publications, Inc, owners of The Birmingham News and the popular WAPI-AM.
By 1950 the station had relocated to FM 99.5, then, in the 1960s, to FM 94.5 where its call letters were switched to WAPI-FM.
