The station was owned by Advance Publications, Inc, owners of The Birmingham News and the popular WAPI-AM.

By 1950 the station had relocated to FM 99.5, then, in the 1960s, to FM 94.5 where it first featured a "solid gold" format, and then, in 1978, became Beautiful 94, an easy listening station. In 1981, after it was bought by Dittman Broadcasting of Mobile, WAFM was turned into 95 Rock, a popular album rock station. It continued as Hot Rockin' 95 FM in 1984 before switching to Top-40 as WAPI-FM "I-95".
