• October 2: Wellborn Thomas Dozier, 54, was shot to death near the Episcopal Church of the Advent on 20th Street and 6th Avenue North. A fellow attorney, D. M. Griswold, was charged with manslaughter. He claimed self-defense, saying he had only fired after Dozier had knocked him down. However two of the bullets appeared to have struck him in the back. Griswold claimed that the incident followed a series of threats by Dozier, and that he feared for his life. The case was heard before Judge Robert Wheeler. Griswold was convicted of first-degree manslaughter and sentenced to a year and a day in prison.
