The American BBS Association was a national association advocating for ethically responsible operation of bulletin board systems and promoting understanding of the social value of BBS. It was formed by Rocky Rawlins, owner of The Matrix BBS, in 1993 and headquartered in Birmingham. Rawlins was inspired to create the organization, patterned after the Better Business Bureau, in response to sensationalist reporting on NBC 13 about minors accessing adult material on-line. Unlike the international Electronic Frontier Foundation, the ABBSA aimed to establish widely-accepted ethical standards and to address local public relations issues through member chapters.
