Cal Markert

Ralph "Cal" Markert (born c. 1973) is a civil engineer and the second Jefferson County Manager, having succeeded Tony Petelos in 2021.

Market earned his bachelor's degree in civil engineering at Auburn University in 1995. He worked for the Alabama Department of Transportation and as county engineer for Russell County. In 2005 he was hired as director of roads and transportation for Baldwin County. He came to Jefferson County in 2017 to accept the position of deputy county manager over infrastructure.

Per the requirements of the County Manager Act, Markert was put forward by a national search firm, in this case Wheless Partners, to fill the vacancy left by Petelos' retirement. The Jefferson County Commission confirmed him on a 4-1 vote on August 20, 2021 to a 5-year term to begin on October 1.
