East Thomas Apartments

East Thomas Apartments is a vacant former 41,472 square-foot apartment complex on a 14.2-acre parcel at 2000 10th Street West, behind the Pilot Travel Center on Arkadelphia Road in East Thomas.

The apartments were the scene of a fatal shooting in 1995. The then-vacant complex was the scene of another fatal shooting in July 2022.

In April 2023 the City of Birmingham notified the owners that the property was not in compliance with the city's property maintenance code and set a May 27 deadline for repairs. A large section of the complex was damaged in fire which broke out on May 28. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The city subsequently filed a civil lawsuit in order to have the property declared a public nuisance.
