Harris Early Learning Center
The Elmer & Glenda Harris Early Learning Center of Birmingham (usually Harris Early Learning Center or HELC) is an early childhood education facility built as a joint project of the Birmingham Urban Revitalization Partnership and Auburn University's Department of Human Development and Family Studies. The center serves over 200 children from 6 weeks to 5 years old and has a full-time teaching staff of 37. The program is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and also serves as a laboratory for developmental research.
The Harris Early Learning Center is located at 1413 7th Avenue North in downtown Birmingham. The $6.5 million facility opened in September 1995. It is named for former Alabama Power CEO Elmer Harris and his wife Glenda.
