John L. Slaughter was pastor of First Baptist Church in Birmingham from 1928 to 1952. He saw the congreation through the depression and to the retirement of its debt after World War II.
His daughter Jane Laroque Slaughter Hardenbergh taught organ at Howard College. In 2011, the restored and expanded organ in Reid Chapel was named in her memory.
