Incorporated Cities and Towns

Check out this list [1] on the NACo website. It seems to be pretty comprehensive, though it doesn't list Pinson (Jefferson County's newest incorporated city) or Clay as being incopoprated, while Center Point is listed and it was incorporated after Clay. --Wheresdib 07:29, 9 February 2007 (PST)

  • I called the Jefferson County Commission's office and they said they got their list off of the ADECA website. I have looked on there but can't find anything. The person I talked to was supposed to e-mail me their list, which has the mayors of each town/city listed as well, but that was over 30 minutes ago and I haven't gotten anything. --Wheresdib 07:57, 9 February 2007 (PST)
  • Good hustle! I'll have to think of a new award to give out.... --08:12, 9 February 2007 (PST)
  • I got the e-mail and am sending it to you now! --Wheresdib 08:19, 9 February 2007 (PST)

City Limits bleed over into Jefferson

The list that I got from the Jefferson County Commission lists Helena, Lakeview, and Sumiton as being in Jefferson. I called each of these and their city limits do bleed over into Jefferson. Helena is in both Jefferson and Shelby, Lakeview is in Tuscaloosa, and Sumiton is in Walker. I assume we should list these on here.

Also, Dora and Fairview were not on the list, so I don't have their phone numbers. I am not sure if they are in Jefferson or not. Fairview is in Cullman County (the one I know about) and since Cullman isn't contiguous with Jefferson, I don't think it belongs. --Wheresdib 10:20, 9 February 2007 (PST)

There's also the ALDOT county maps, as listed at Bhamwiki:References. I used them to label town split between counties. (Hope you like it.) I did not see Dora or Fairview, so I removed the latter from the list. The bits of Helena and Sumiton were shown. Lakeview must have just recently extended across the county line because the maps show it strictly in Tuscaloosa County, but I went with Wheresdib's phone call. --Lkseitz 13:14, 9 February 2007 (PST)
  • I wound up finding a number for Dora and she said that the city limits were not in Jefferson. The only Fairview I could find was in Cullman (as I had said before). The Lakeview Town Hall can be reached at 205-477-1999. I didn't think to ask for details as to when they annexed land in Jefferson. --Wheresdib 13:51, 9 February 2007 (PST)
  • No Fairviews in the Jeff Co Map Book. "Place Names in Alabama" lists three, Unincorporated communities in Chilton Co. and Coffee Co., and one (inc. in 1967) in Cullman Co. --Dystopos 21:46, 9 February 2007 (PST)

Reformat

  • In light of the compact elegance of Template:Jefferson County I've reformatted this list to give a few more columns of info. FWIW, I found the Alabama League of Municipalities directory to be more up-to-date than the Jeffco list. If anyone knows how to right-align the population column, that would be an improvement. --Dystopos 20:24, 13 February 2007 (PST)
    • I don't know if that was the best way to right-align the populations, but it worked. --Lkseitz 20:38, 13 February 2007 (PST)

Former cities

  • It occurs to me that it would be useful to have a similar list ordered by date of incorporation, which would include incorporated cities (North Birmingham, Avondale, Elyton, Woodlawn) that are no longer independent, or which have dissolved. --Dystopos 20:27, 13 February 2007 (PST)

sorting

  • If someone could help me figure out what I need to install where to enable this, I'd appreciate it. --Dystopos 12:23, 14 February 2007 (PST)
    • You just copied a bit too much before pasting. You doubled your "{|" at the start of the table, which screwed it all up. Very cool feature! I may have to go trolling for other potentially sortable tables. --Lkseitz 14:57, 14 February 2007 (PST)
      • Well cool. I guess it would be nicer if it actually worked on anything except the first column. I probably need to format the data cells somehow... --Dystopos 15:09, 14 February 2007 (PST)
        • It's working for me! That is pretty darn cool. --Wheresdib 18:15, 14 February 2007 (PST)
        • I'm able to sort on any column except the last one. On both Firefox 1.5 and IE 6. --Lkseitz 19:39, 14 February 2007 (PST)
          • I didn't check that last column. IE7 and Firefox 1.5 in use here (and IE6 at work). The wife uses Firefox 2.0 but I haven't upgraded yet. --Wheresdib 20:29, 14 February 2007 (PST)
            • Well, I'll be. Works like a charm in Firefox. Clicking on any column merely switches between an alphabetical and a reverse alphabetical sorting by city name in Safari. (I think the last column, with blank cells, won't sort by design). --Dystopos 21:08, 14 February 2007 (PST)
  • I wonder if there's a way to put a column of row numbers on the far right which would remain in order regardless of how the other columns were sorted (so you could see at a glance, for example, which was the 23rd most populous city in Jefferson County). --Dystopos 16:18, 24 October 2007 (PDT)
    • Reading the help, you can do a lot of things with the script, but I don't see a way to do that. Doesn't mean we should give up, though! --Lkseitz 08:06, 25 October 2007 (PDT)

County Line

I was looking at List of cities and towns in Alabama on Wikipedia. Apparently the U.S. Census Bureau considers Blount County to be County Line's primary county. From a quick look at the map, it does appear that most of the town's population, at least, is in Blount. I've therefore removed it from this list and the Jefferson County template. --Lkseitz (talk) 10:18, 8 January 2016 (PST)
