James Oscar Hanes (born December 7, 1873; died November 17, 1942) was a Methodist minister.
Hanes was the son of Joshua Andrew Jackson "Jack" Hanes and his wife, the former Margaret Hayden.
Hanes married for the former Emma Barton in Woodlawn in 1893. The couple had eight children, Thomas, Eugene, Arthur, Mary, Hazel, Martha, Emma Lucille, and Margaret.
In 1927 Hanes was invited by Paramount Records scout Harry Charles to record two sermons with backed by a piano and male chorus. he traveled to Chicago and delivered his "Abounding Sin and Abounding Grace," and "A Symphony of Calls." The resulting disc, Paramount 3057, was issued, unusually, with a portrait of Hanes on the label.
Hanes died in 1942 and is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery.
