South East Lake is a neighborhood in Birmingham's Roebuck-South East Lake community, and the largest of the city's 99 neighborhoods by population. It includes over 3,500 households and businesses.
It borders Irondale to the Southeast, Brown Springs and East Lake neighborhoods across Oporto-Madrid Boulevard on the Southwest, Wahouma and North East Lake across 1st Avenue North to the northwest, and Roebuck Springs-South Roebuck across Red Oak Road, Newport Avenue and Roebuck Springs Road to the north. I-59 traverses the neighborhood's northwest corner.
The neighborhood includes the Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve and the East Lake Library. Students in the neighborhood attend Barrett, Robinson and Christian Elementary Schools, Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School, and Woodlawn High School. The former Banks High School and South East Lake Elementary School campuses are located along 86th Street South in South East Lake. The St Barnabus Regional School. Birmingham Fire Station No. 19 is also located in the neighborhood.
The South East Lake Neighborhood Association (SELNA) meets on the third Monday of each month at East Lake Methodist Church. Mitchell Nash is the neighborhood president, having succeeded Christine Bryant-Harden in 2012.
