Palisades Shopping Center
The Palisades Shopping Center is a 290,000 square-foot shopping center located on Palisades Boulevard at Green Springs Highway in Birmingham, adjacent to Homewood.
Virginia College of Birmingham leases several spaces in the center.
In 2002 the city of Homewood considered purchasing the shopping center for redevelopment into a municipal complex. Homewood officials were able to agree on a $16.9 million purchase price, but were unable to get Birmingham to agree to deannex the property.
In 2006 the shopping center was sold to Retail Specialists, which plans a major renovation and the development of outparcels along Palisades Boulevard. Wal-Mart's Neighborhood Market grocery is moving into the space originally occupied by Winn-Dixie.
The Palisades has been recommended as the location of one of two "superstop" transit centers in BJCTA's 2006-2015 Transit Development Plan.
