This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2010. It includes homicide cases occuring within the city limits during the calendar year. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

4 homicides have been reported in the city as of March 1, putting Birmingham on pace for 24 in 2010. Based on the 2008 census estimate of 228,196 population, that represents 10.5 homicides per 100,000 population for the year. Birmingham had 72 homicides in 2009, 88 in 2008, and a record of 141 in 1992. At this time in 2009 there had been 12 homicides.

Birmingham is averaging 2.0 homicides per month, or one every 15 days. There was 1 incident in January, 3 in February, and none so far in March. The longest stretch without a homicide was the 20 days between January 1 and 21. Two deaths occurred on Sundays and 2 on Wednesdays.

Of the 4 reported homicides, suspects have been identified in 1 case, apprehended in 1, charged in none and convicted in none.

At least 3 of the 4 reported homicides were shootings. Robbery appeared to be the motive in 1 case. 1 incident took place on a street, and 3 inside homes or apartment. 3 victims were males and 1 was female.

  2. February 7: Rachel Lee Blair, 26, was found stabbed to death in her apartment at the Forest Ridge Apartments at 660 Valley Crest Drive (map). A suspect has been taken into custody but not yet charged. (report)
  3. February 7: Steve Hilson, 25, was found shot to death near his car on the 1800 block of Princeton Court (map). No arrest. (report)
  4. February 10: Jeff Wormley, mid-40s, was found shot to death inside a home on the 3400 block of Willard Avenue Southwest (map). No arrest. (report)

Notes

  1. Although Smith was shot in 2009, his January 20, 2010 death became the year's first homicide investigation.
