The 2005 National Organization of Minority Architects 33rd Annual International Congress and Exposition was held October 13-15, 2005 at the Sheraton Birmingham. With 400 attendees, the conference was the largest in the organization's history. Delegates had access to lectures, continuing education workshops, exhibitor booths, award ceremonies, social events and tours of the area.
The convention was organized by the Birmingham chapter, headed by Creig Hoskins. Speakers included Artur Davis, Pierre Atepa, Charles McAfee, Calvin Kam, Jack Travis, Joseph Giattina, Chris Giattina, Bruce Lindsey, and Cheryl Morgan.
Special events included a "Bro's Arts Ball" at the Sheraton, tours of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and the Loft District, and a golf outing at the Highland Park Golf and Racquet Club.
Judging for NOMA's 2005 Student Design Competition was conducted during the conference. Ten teams of students from across the country submitted proposed designs for an entrepreneurial center to be located on an existing parking lot at the corner of 16th Street North and 6th Avenue North. The program included office space for start-up companies with shared facilities, a business center with an auditorium, workshop spaces, computer labs and interview rooms, and an urban studio for the Tuskegee University School of Architecture, with dormitory housing for students.
