42 is a feature film about outfielder Jackie Robinson's first year in the Major Leagues in 1947. It was produced for a 2013 release by Legendary Pictures, with some scenes shot at Rickwood Field and other Birmingham locations.
The film, which was written and directed by Brian Helgeland, stars Chadwick Boseman as Robinson, with Harrison Ford as Dodgers owner Branch Rickey. Andre Holland, Lucas Black and Linc Hand, all of Alabama, also appear in the film.
Filming in Birmingham took place during the week of May 13-20, 2012. Most of the scenes were staged at Rickwood Field. While the stadium doubled for several other 1940s-era ballparks, one scene recreated a 1945 Birmingham Black Barons date against Robinson's Kansas City Monarchs. Crews also shot footage on 5th Avenue North and the Tutwiler Hotel.
Other characters in the film include Birmingham's Bobby Bragan and Dixie Walker.
42 is set to premiere on April 12, 2013, the 66th anniversary of Robinson's first Major League start.
