A. Johnston Hawkins (born November 27, 1886 in North Birmingham; died c. 1980) was Birmingham's city engineer from 1921 to 1934 and later served as director of the Alabama State Planning Commission.
Hawkins was a grandson of T. F. Cheek, and was born on his farm in North Birmingham. As city engineer, he oversaw completion of the 24th Street Viaduct and mapped the city's segregated zoning for a 1933 "residential security" map submitted to the Federal Home Loan Bank Board's Home Owners' Loan Corporation.
Hawkins died in 1980 and was survived by his wife, Bessie and son, A. J. Jr. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Birmingham, and is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery.
