The Addiction Prevention Coalition (formerly The Freedom Source, Inc.) is a non-profit public health advocacy group that seeks to reduce substance abuse in central Alabama by fostering the work of student-led chapters in high schools, connecting abusers to recovery resources, and engaging the community in collaborative work.
The group's offices have relocated to the Vulcan Life building at 100 Vulcan Road from 100 Union Hill Drive off of Hollywood Boulevard.
The Addiction Prevention Coalition was founded in 2007 as The Freedom Source, Inc. and originally focused on getting individual alcohol and drug abusers into recovery programs. Since then the group has expanded its efforts to promote public awareness of the many ways that drugs negatively affect public health and society as a whole. Founding director J. Sándor Cheka III was succeeded by Mike Vest in 2017.
The Coalition's board of directors includes Neal Berte, Steve Briggs, Rusty Dorr, Ann Florie, Drayton Nabors Jr, Shanta Owens, Richard Simmons III, Lauren Sisler and Thomas Wilder Jr.
The Coalition has administered grants awarded by the President's Office of National Drug Control Policy and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Alabama. Its annual public fund-raiser is an End Heroin walk at Railroad Park.
