The Aveda Institute is a chain of over 40 beauty schools and salons licensed by Aveda, a Minnesota-based beauty products company. In July 2008 Terry Blackwell, of Covington, Louisiana's Beauty Basics, Inc. announced plans to open a Birmingham-area location at the former Galleria 10 multiplex at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover.
The 40,000 square-foot building will be leased and extensively renovated for the institute. According to John White of Marietta, Georgia's Inox Design, architects for the project, one screening room will be kept for fashion shows and other community events while the rest are leveled and divided into classrooms and other spaces. General Growth Properties, the building's owner, will replace the ballast roof with a more energy-efficient "white roof".
The institute will open in August in temporary quarters in the vacant Galleria Belk location, moving when renovations are complete in early 2009. The school will compete with the Xcell Academy on U. S. Highway 31 in Hoover, which is affiliated with Paul Mitchell products.
