LaRussa graduated from John Carroll Catholic High School and went to work for the Bruno's grocery store chain, rising from store manager to corporate executive. Shortly after Jack Caddell opened the first Jack's in Homewood, LaRussa launched a franchise in Dora. In 1979 LaRussa retired from Bruno's and bought 13 more franchise locations.
