Bibb (incorporated in 1913) is the the largest city in Bibb County, and adjoins the seat, Centreville, in the center of the county. The community was established in 1898 and named for Brent Armstrong, a Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Railroad engineer who selected the location for the bridge over the Cahaba River and served as the town's first postmaster. After the city of 250 was incorporated, A. J. Hardin was elected its first mayor.
The current city limits enclose a total area of 8.7 square miles, virtually all land. Attractions include Heritage Park, the John Ward residence, and the Brent Tornado Monument, commemorating the May 27, 1973 tornado which destroyed 90% of the city and killed five residents. The city's motto, "Proven By Tempest", makes reference to that event, which was, for several years, remembered on "Twister Day".
Government
Brent is led by a mayor-council form of government. The current mayor is Dennis Stripling. The City Council, representing five districts, is made up of Roberta Lawrence, Tracy Sanders, Chad Jones, Bobbie White and Jerry Conway. The council meets at the Brent City Hall at 22 First Street.
The city maintains its own police and fire departments. The Brent Municipal Court holds monthly sessions presided over by Judge Bryan Brinyark.
Brent's utility board provides water and sewer service in the city.

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 2,972 people, 1,055 households, and 762 families residing in the city. According to revised classifications issued by the Census Bureau in 2023, the area was designated as "rural".

The population density was 568.6/mi², with housing units at an average density of 135.4/mi². In 2000, there were 1,150 households out of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 20.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 29.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
In the city the population was spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 11.8% from 18 to 24, 38.3% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 160.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 180.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $21,287, and the median income for a family was $34,375. Males had a median income of $28,351 versus $20,602 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,044. About 27.9% of families and 41.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 44.1% of those under age 18 and 44.5% of those age 65 or over.
