Caufield Square was a proposed $30 million entertainment, retail and residential development on Mount Olive Road in downtown Gardendale. It was conceived by a group of developers headed by Bob Jones of Tuscaloosa's Palladium Properties. They assembled the 22-acre site in August 2004 from 24 individual parcels.

Although site work was largely completed, the developers halted the project and placed the property on the real estate market in January 2008.

In 2012 the City of Gardendale purchased the property for a new Gardendale City Hall building. The new City Hall was eventually constructed near the existing Civic Center.

On March 1, 2016 UAB announced the purchase of 5 acres of land in Caufield Square for the purpose of constructing a medical office building to house primary care and family care services and improve overall access to medical care for residents of Gardendale/North Jefferson County. Also, they plan to seek state approval to build a free-standing emergency department at the same location.
