Colonial Properties Trust (NYSE: CLP) was a multifamily focused real estate investment trust (REIT). Colonial developed, managed, and leased retail, office and multi-family properties. It was headed by CEO Thomas Lowder and its offices were located, since 2007, in the Colonial Center at Brookwood Village.

History

Founded in 1970 in Montgomery, the company later moved its headquarters to Birmingham. The company went public in September 1993.

Colonial's downtown Birmingham offices were located in Colonial Plaza, 2101 6th Avenue North at the corner of Richard Arrington Jr Boulevard North.

As of December 31, 2006 the company owned or managed 39,104 apartment units, 17.6 million square feet of office space and 12.1 million square feet of retail shopping space located in Sunbelt states spanning Virginia to Nevada.

In 2013 Colonial Properties merged with Mid-America Apartment Communities Inc. of Memphis, Tennessee. MAA consolidated administrative offices in Memphis and began selling off retail properties to maintain focus on its multi-family residential portfolio.
