The current presiding bishop is [[Teresa Jefferson-Snorton]]. Prior to [[1954]] the Christian Methodist Church was known as the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church. It was founded in [[1870]] by African Americans who had formerly been members of the [[Methodist Episcopal Church, South]] (MECS). The White leadership of the MECS supported their African Americans members in leaving for the new autonomous denomination.

The Fifth Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is based in Birmingham and covers the states of Alabama and Florida. The current presiding bishop is Teresa Jefferson-Snorton. Prior to 1954 the Christian Methodist Church was known as the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church. It was founded in 1870 by African Americans who had formerly been members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (MECS). The White leadership of the MECS supported their African Americans members in leaving for the new autonomous denomination.
