Prior to 1954 the Christian Methodist Church was known as the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church. It was founded in 1870 by African Americans who had formerly been members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (MECS). The White leadership of the MECS supported their African Americans members in leaving for the new autonomous denomination.
