Five Mile Creek Greenway in Gardendale

The Five Mile Creek Greenway in Gardendale is a 2-mile long segment of the 16.5-mile Five Mile Creek Greenway which follows the path of the abandoned Cane Creek Branch rail corridor through northern and western Jefferson County. The recreational trail, which opened in Gardendale in June 2019, welcomes runners, walkers, cyclists and pets, but not motorized vehicles.

Gardendale's greenway picks up from the western end of the Fultondale segment at Shady Grove Road between Easterwood Boulevard and Franklin Circle. It proceeds west toward Fieldstown Road, just north of Brookside-Coalburg Road where a trailhead was constructed with connections to the Gardendale Urban Trail System at the Clemons Recreational Complex to the north. From there the greenway continues west, bending northward as it approaches Powder Mill Road (Jefferson County Road 67) and ends at the intersection of Plum Road (formerly Jew Hollow Road), where the Brookside segment begins.

Vulcan Materials Company donated 700 tons of crushed limestone for the trail project and furnished additional materials at a discount.
