Henry P. Johnston

Henry P. Johnston began his career in advertising in 1929 after graduation from Washington and Lee. He worked one year with Kelly-Smith, Newspaper Representatives in New York, then returned to Birmingham to work in the National Advertising Department of the Birmingham News/Birmingham Age-Herald. In 1931, he became publisher of the Huntsville Times. He was made Local Advertising Manager of the News/Age-Herald in 1934.

In 1936 he became the Managing Director of radio station WSGN in Birmingham. He held this position until 1953, when he became President and Managing Director of the Alabama Broadcasting System, operating WAPI, WAFM, and WABT. In addition to his broadcasting duties, Johnston also served as Vice President of the Birmingham News Company and President of the Huntsville Times.
