The Red Mountain Greenway and Recreational Commission was established by the Alabama legislature in 2006 to purchase, construct, maintain and operate the proposed Red Mountain Park, a 1,108 acre section of Red Mountain adjoining southwest Birmingham, east Bessemer and north Hoover.
As of January 11, 2007, seven of the commissions 15 appointed seats had been filled. A quorum of 9 is needed in order to complete the purchase of the property from U. S. Steel. A deadline of January 31, 2007 has been set for completing the deal.
