  • August 9: Dixie Gaither, 72, and her son were beaten to death during a robbery. William "Corky" Snyder stole a gun and later shot her son's girlfriend with it. He was convicted of three counts of captial murder in 1996 and sentenced to death. His conviction was reversed by the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, but reinstated by the Alabama Supreme Court. Snyder killed himself in his cell at the Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore in July 2011. (report)
