Michael D. Miles (born August 1954) was Jefferson County Treasurer from 2012 to 2020.
Miles studied finance, political science, history and English at UAB. He worked as a loan officer for Birmingham Trust National Bank, and worked with his father to organize Greater Birmingham Ministries while also actively campaigning for a variety of political candidates.
He served under Mayor Richard Arrington as "Director of Inter-Governmental Relations" from 1983 to 1990. In 1994 he was hired as chief deputy to Alabama Secretary of State Jim Bennett.
Miles also serves as chair of the board for the Alabama Center for Law and Civic Education, as a member of the National General Council on Finance for the United Methodist Church, and previously served on a task-force for the Jefferson County Board of Education. He is a member of the Jefferson County Democratic Executive Committee and served as president of the Birmingham Downtown Democratic Club.
During the 2016 primary campaign a "sample ballot" was distributed which implied that Arrington had endorsed challenger Eric Major for County Treasurer. Arrington filed suit, and Judge Joseph Boohaker issued a restraining order against Major. Miles won a narrow victory over Major in the primary runoff, and was unopposed in the 2016 general election.
Miles failed to advance to a runoff between Eyrika Parker and Roderick Scott in the 2020 Democratic primary to retain his office. Parker went on to win the nomination, and was unopposed in the general election.
